Types of business energy tariffs
Variable rate tariff
A variable energy tariff means that your unit rates and standing charge can increase or decrease. Suppliers might change the price of your unit rates and standing charge if the cost of wholesale energy changes, or if Ofgem, the UK's energy regulator, changes the price cap. Rates may also fluctuate and change with the market, should prices increase or decrease in gas and electricity.
Fixed rate tariff
A fixed rate energy contract is, as you might imagine, a contract where the rate you pay for your energy is fixed at the start of your contract. This will be set at a predetermined price per kWh (kilowatt hour, the standard measurement for electricity) at the start of your energy contract. This is one of the most popular business tariffs and the easiest to budget. With this tariff, you pay a standing charge and fixed unit price every month.
Understanding business energy rates
There are two main elements to a business electricity tariff – the unit rate per kWh and the standing charge.
Unit rate - – This is what you pay for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of energy you use
Standing charge - This is the cost charged for having energy supplied to your business premises and covers the upkeep of the national grid
